The new exhibition at Heritage House, First Comes Love: Courtship in the Victorian Era, explores the shift from marriage as a social and economic necessity to one based on romantic love and emotional fulfillment. This transformation allowed women greater agency in choosing partners and redefined marriage as a space for personal happiness, though still constrained by societal norms. In places like Riverside, evolving courtship rituals, including symbolic gestures like flowers and letters, reflected these changes and amplified women’s voices in matters of the heart. From March 14th – June 29th, 2025, all tours of Heritage House will include access to this exhibition.
